Retaining wall replacement improves safety and durability

Overview

Midcity Group was engaged by an education and community facility to replace an ageing timber sleeper retaining wall that had reached the end of its service life. The existing wall was showing significant deterioration and required a safe, durable and low-maintenance replacement solution.

The project involved the demolition and removal of the existing structure, followed by the construction of a new engineered concrete sleeper retaining wall. Midcity also completed associated drainage, backfilling, compaction, reinstatement and landscaping works to ensure the surrounding area was returned to a safe, functional and visually improved condition.

Scope of Works

  • Demolition and removal of the existing timber sleeper retaining wall.
  • Excavation and preparation of the retaining wall alignment.
  • Installation of a new concrete sleeper retaining wall system in accordance with engineering requirements.
  • Installation of agricultural drainage (AG line) behind the retaining wall, including connection into existing site stormwater services to ensure effective drainage and long-term wall performance.
  • Backfilling and compaction behind the retaining structure.
  • Restoration and landscaping make good works to surrounding areas.
  • Final quality inspections and project handover

Challenges

  • Working within a confined area adjacent to existing structures and landscape zones.
  • Delivering the works within a tight two-week construction program while minimising disruption to site users.

Outcome

  • The project was completed on time and within budget, delivering a stronger, more durable retaining solution for a busy education and community environment.
  • The new concrete sleeper wall provides improved structural performance and longevity when compared with the original timber installation, helping reduce future maintenance requirements.
  • The completed landscaping and make-good works ensured the wall integrated neatly with the surrounding environment, improving both safety and presentation.

Value Delivered

  • Improved site safety and structural integrity
  • Increased asset life and reduced maintenance requirements
  • Enhanced presentation of landscaped areas
  • Delivered within a two-week program
  • Defect-free handover
