Creating flexible learning spaces through thoughtful library design

Midcity delivered a three-week library upgrade project, transforming an underutilised section of an existing open-plan library into two functional seminar rooms designed to support small group learning, staff meetings and student collaboration.

The works were completed within an operational education environment and required careful planning, coordination and communication to minimise disruption while maintaining the construction programme.

Scope of Works

  • Construction of two new seminar rooms within the existing library footprint.
  • Installation of aluminium-framed glazed partitions to create defined learning spaces while retaining natural light and visibility.
  • Supply and installation of timber doors with vision panels.
  • Replication and stain matching of high-level plywood fascia detailing to integrate the new works with the existing library design.
  • Acoustic enhancements to minimise sound transfer and improve functionality.

Project Challenges

  • Seamless integration with existing finishes
A key requirement was ensuring the new seminar rooms looked and felt like part of the existing library. The project team undertook detailed investigation and sample testing to match the high-level plywood fascia to the existing joinery to achieve a consistent finish.
  • Acoustic performance
Because the rooms were located within an active library environment, effective sound separation was important. Acoustic treatments and partition detailing were selected to improve privacy and reduce noise transmission without compromising the overall look of the space.
  • Live environment delivery
Working within an operational education setting required careful sequencing and communication to maintain safety, reduce disruption to students and staff and deliver the project on time.

Outcome

The completed seminar rooms provide flexible, high-quality learning spaces with improved acoustic separation, enhanced functionality and a contemporary finish that complements the existing library environment.

Delivered within programme by Douglas Stokes and Nathan Teixeira, the project demonstrates Midcity’s ability to deliver detailed construction solutions in live environments, balancing practical requirements with design continuity and a strong focus on end-user outcomes.
